Winning Essay: "My World - Our Future" by Bhavjeet Kaur from Malaysia |
This piece was submitted in the Kids World Travel Guide Essay Competition 2025 in the Senior Category 12 - 15 years.

When I look around me, I see a world full of memories, dreams, and possibilities. This world, the trees I grew up under, the sky I’ve watched change colors a million times, the air I breathe, it’s not just a planet. It’s my home. And I know I’m not alone in this. This is our home. But sometimes, I wonder: will it still feel like home in the future?
I’ve grown up hearing about melting ice caps, rising temperatures, animals going extinct, forests vanishing. At first, I didn’t really understand. It felt so far away. But now that I’m older, I see the truth, we’re hurting the very world that’s been taking care of us since the beginning. We take and take, without thinking about what comes next. And that scares me.
I think about kids in the future, maybe my own one day. Will they ever get to lie on grass that isn’t covered in trash? Will they know the smell of real rain? Will they be able to swim in clean oceans or hear birds singing in the morning? Or will they only know these things through old pictures and stories?
That’s why I believe so deeply that our future starts now. Not next year. Not when we’re older. Not when someone else takes the lead. It starts with the little things we do today. I’m just a student, I don’t have much power, but I have a voice, and I want to use it. I want to make better choices. Say no to plastic. Stop wasting water. Use less. Reuse more. Speak up when something feels wrong. Share what I know with others.
But I also know I can’t do this alone. None of us can. This isn’t just my fight, it’s our responsibility. Every person, every country, every heart that beats on this planet shares this future. The Earth doesn’t care what language we speak, what religion we follow, or what country we’re from. We all live under the same sky. We all walk the same ground.
So what kind of future do we want to build together? I want a future where we care more. Where people help each other. Where we protect animals instead of pushing them toward extinction. Where our cities are green, not grey. Where children don’t have to wear masks just to breathe clean air. I want a future full of hope.
I know it won’t be easy. There’s a lot to fix, and time is running out. But I believe we still have a chance. A chance to be better. A chance to grow without destroying. A chance to love this world back the way it has always loved us.
My world is hurting. But our future can still be beautiful, if we choose to fight for it. Together.
