Great Rift Valley - Albertine RiftRwanda is often called "the land of a thousand hills" because almost the entire country is covered in rolling hills. This is how the landscape of the central region around Gitarama looks like.

Kigali is known as one of the foremost technology and services hubs in Africa.
Kigali Business DistrictThe dense rainforests of the Virunga Mountains are found in the northwestern region of the country. This is where Volcanoes National Park with its famous inhabitants, the Mountain Gorillas, is located.
Rwanda houses five volcanoes along the country's northern border and more than 20 lakes and rivers, some of them are known for being the source of the River Nile.

Rwanda is the fourth smallest nation on the African mainland and about the same size as Albania or Haiti or the U.S. state of Maryland or slightly smaller than Wales/ UK.
A flight from London/ England to Kigali takes a bit less than nine hours on a direct flight and a flight from New York/ USA takes about 17 hours (no direct flights).
Rwanda is one of the landlocked countries in east central Africa. Rwanda has both tropical forests and grasslands.
Much of the country lies on high plateaus and has an average elevation of about 1,500 m/ 4,921 ft above sea level, making it much cooler than many countries near the Equator.

Rwanda has four national parks and reserves, these are Akagera, Nyungwe, Volcanoes and Gishwati-Mukura National Parks. The west of Rwanda forms a branch of the Great Rift Valley known as the Albertine Rift. Lake Kivu is in this major rift valley.

The country lies close to the Equator and has a tropical highland climate. However, the temperatures are colder than those in other equatorial regions due to the high elevation.
The months of the two rainy seasons between February and June as well as between September and December are very humid. The capital city Kigali in the center of the country has temperatures between 15 and 28 °C (59 and 82 °F) all year round.
There is a high risk of malaria in Rwanda especially in the western and northern highlands.

Rwanda is a young country with about half the population under 20 years old and this is East Africa's most densely populated country with a population of about 445 people per square kilometre. (NISR 2026)
Most of the Rwandan people live in rural areas (about 70%). The largest urban centres are Kigali, Rubavu and Nyagatare.
Women working on the tea plantations in RwandaIn the countryside, more than 80% of village leaders are still men. However, Rwanda is well known for giving women many opportunities. Many women have important leadership roles especially in government and in large companies, and Rwanda is known internationally for its strong focus on gender equality.
Music, dancing and storytelling are still important traditions in Rwandan culture. Respect for elders is an important cultural value and there are many traditional festivals. Umuganura is the main harvest festival.
Another unique tradition is Kwita Izina which is Rwanda's famous gorilla naming ceremony that takes place once a year. During this festival, newborn mountain gorillas are each given a unique name in a special conservation ceremony as explained in this short video:
Community service days are held every month and are to be attended by all residents.

Traditional arts include drumming, traditional dancing and storytelling and remain as important in Rwandan culture as modern culture.
Basket weaving is a respected craft. The woven Agaseke baskets are popular souvenirs.

Kinyarwanda is spoken by almost everyone in Rwanda. This is one of the few African countries where nearly the entire population shares one native language.
English and French are widely taught in schools while Swahili is increasingly used in business.
Rwanda's economy has grown significantly in the last twenty years. The country's most important economic sectors are now technology, services and tourism and agriculture. Mining and agriculture are also big economic sectors.

Among the major mineral resources of Rwanda are tin, tungsten and tantalum.
The national airline is RwandAir. It is ranked highly as major African airline and has routes across Africa, Europe and Asia.

Rwanda is famous as one of Africa's top wildlife destinations and the country is known for its major conservation projects. Rwanda protects many endangered animals in its forests and national parks.
The open savannahs, rolling hills and misty mountain forests provide a variety of animal habitats. There are over 200 species of mammals in the country including chimpanzees, golden monkeys, hippopotamus, antelopes and zebras and over 700 bird species such as the colourful sunbirds.
SunbirdRwanda’s national animal is the African leopard which is only found in the savannah of Northeastern Rwanda, in Akagera National Park.
Can you spot the leopard?Lions and black rhino have been successfully reintroduced to Akagera as well. Akagera is located about three hours northeast of the capital city Kigali and is also the home of Africa's fascinating "Big Five" animals.

Rwanda is one of only three countries where the endangered mountain gorillas live in the wild. About half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Permits to trek mountain gorillas are among the most expensive wildlife experiences in the world!

Most traditional Rwandan meals are made from fresh local ingredients that are grown on family farms.
The staple foods in Rwanda are beans, bananas, maize (corn), cassava and sweet potatoes.
