There are 193 countries or independent states in the world, 83 of these will hold elections either for their president or their national parliament in 2024.

About 2 billion people will take to the election urns in 2024. This is about one quarter of the world population.

Not all elections are considered free and fair, some elections are marred by disinformation and manipulation some even by coups or boycotts.  

These are the countries which are spread over all six inhabited continents that hold elections this year:

• 35 countries in Europe (27 EU plus 8)
• 20 countries in Africa
• 17 countries in Asia
• 5 countries in North America
• 2 countries in South America
• 4 countries in Oceania
